Electric motors used for direct coupling to small fan impellers are normally single phase shaded pole type in the approximate range of 6 to 150 watts.
Their characteristics are low starting torque, low efficiency and power factor and high slip. Unless specially wired they are non-reversing. Their main advantages are simple construction and low cost. They are also adaptable for modulating speed control by winding extra coils and taps into the main field or by adding impedance externally as with a series choke. Their low starting torque is not a particular disadvantage as starting torque required for propeller fans is usually low. Designs now available with double ended shaft makes them bi-directional simply by turning the motor around to choose clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation.
